Branson Fish Hatchery

October 27, 2014 / Alex Scranton / Branson Attractions

When you spend a day relaxing and fishing on Lake Taneycomo, do you ever stop and think about where all those brown and rainbow trout come from? They come from the lake, of course, but did you know that they were produced in a fish hatchery? Plus, did you know that that hatchery is an exciting place for families to visit? Who knew, right? If you’re visiting Branson with your family, be sure to check out this free, fun, and completely unique attraction. You’ll learn about Ozarkian wildlife, have a chance to feed the fish, and get a glimpse at the behind-the-scenes world of Missouri lake fishing.

Branson Fish Hatchery

Branson Fish Hatchery

What: The Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery.

Where: 483 Hatchery Road, Branson, MO, 65616.

Who: For more information, call 417-334-4865 or visit the hatchery’s website.

Cost: The Branson fish hatchery is free to visit.

Located just below Table Rock Dam, the Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery produces over 1.1 million rainbow and brown trout each year. The facility is a great spot for families, couples, and lovers of the great outdoors to explore. There are indoor nature exhibits featuring fish, turtles, and snakes, as well as the huge tanks of fish outside. You’re sure to learn a lot about Missouri lakes, trout, and how fish are raised within (and released from) a hatchery. The friendly employees and volunteers are always happy to answer any questions you might have. Plus, if you bring a few quarters along, you can even feed the fish!

The hatchery, a favorite of Trip Advisor travelers, is open year-round. During the summer, from Memorial Day through Labor Day, it’s open from 8am to 6pm, and tours are offered on weekdays at 10am, 11am, 1pm, and 2pm. From September through June, it’s open from 8am to 5pm, and guests are invited to try a self-guided tour. Note that the hatchery is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Finally, when you’re finished at the hatchery, be sure to check out the nearby hiking trails. You’ll find three miles of easy-to-moderate trails that amble through forests, glades, and the lovely hills of the Ozarks.

So whether you’re an avid angler, a casual fisher, or just someone who appreciates the great outdoors, be sure to visit the Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery during your next trip to Branson. You only need to devote an hour or two of your time to this hidden gem, and as we’ve already mentioned, it doesn’t cost a cent. You could combine the hatchery with a few hours of fishing on the lake, or head back into town for some scrumptious food and live entertainment. From concerts and outlet malls to golf resorts and fish hatcheries, Branson’s got it all!
